New Officials
If you interested in becoming an NCHRA official, the
following must be completed:
- If you have never officiated before, we recommend you attend
the officials training classes which held during the summer at the
Triangle Sportsplex.
Refer to the calendar for times and dates.
- Attend a USA Hockey seminar. Again, check the
calendar for dates. Most are held during the late summer or
fall.
- Take the USA Hockey Officials test and send payment to USA
Hockey.
- Receiving notification from USA Hockey that you have passed
the test. You will also receive your USA Hockey crest which must be worn during all
USA Hockey sanctioned game.
- Pay membership dues to NCHRA.
In addition to the above, you must have the following
equipment:
- Black hockey helmet
- Black trousers
- Hockey referee sweater
- Finger whistle
- Skates
- Elbow pads
- Shin guards
- Cup protector
- Referee girdle (optional)
- Half shield/visor (optional)
Once you receive your crest from USA Hockey, paid your
membership dues to NCHRA, and have all the necessary equipment, you are ready to work
games.
Your first few games will be with a trainer. You
will then be assigned to a number of different officials over the course of the season so
as to gain experience that helps you develop "your style". You will be
paid full fee for all games worked.
Always remember that ice hockey is the world's toughest
sport to officiate. To become a top notch official you must have desire,
determination, and dedication.
