History NCHRA was formed on September 28, 1980 at the Daniel Boone Twin Rinks in Hillsborough, NC. The group consisted of Bruce Hoffman from Durham, Dave Driggs from Raleigh, Ed Flynn from Cary, Larry Fields and Ben Shoenthal from Greensboro. All of these men referreed along with Dick Butler from Burlington and Stan Kawalski from Jamestown. Ben Shoenthal was elected president The first season saw 54 games played, consisting of youth and college games. Our membership fee for the season was $15. From a 1980 base of seven, we recruited and trained officials rapidly, attaining a staff of 65 by 1990, which included a Raleigh chapter headed up by Victor Cox. The next season Mr. Cox formed his own group. The early 90s saw many changes in the rules, the implementation of the "Get Tough" and "Zero Tolerance" policies, and even the name of the governing body changed from the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS) to USA Hockey. 1995 Our association changed its crest to the current one that employs the puck motif. 1996 Our association forms a Sandhills chapter to go along with our existing Piedmont chapter. Fred Megan supervises that chapter. 1999 Currently we have 49 members in 23 different localities. They range in age from 13 to 56 years.
